Family & Friends

Iowa State Penitentiary recognizes the importance of family and friends in the daily lives of our offender population. Evidence based practices tells us that pro-social relationships can improve the chances of a successful offender re-entry into society. Here is some basic information that may assist you in contacting an offender who is housed at Iowa State Penitentiary.

Telephone Flowers for Visits

Calls are automatically limited to 20 minutes by the Offender Pre-Paid Telephone Service. The DOC Offender Telephone Accounts Pre-paid form must be completed and sent in with each deposit to be placed on an offenders telephone account. This form is available at all institutions and on the Departments web site at www.doc.state.ia.us. Only cashier's checks or money orders will be accepted. The minimum deposit is $20.00. All deposits must be designated to a specific offender identified by name and matching I.D. number. Deposits may also be designated to a specific telephone number as well. Toll free numbers and 900 numbers are prohibited. All deposits must be mailed directly to: IDOC, Offender Telephone Accounts, PO Box 1417, Fort Madison IA 52627

In case of an emergency, critical injury, illness, or death of a family member, you should contact the institution directly.

Mail/OMail

An offender can send and receive mail. All incoming mail must contain a complete return address and be signed in full with senders first & last name. There are other restrictions that may apply; you can download the Iowa Department of Corrections policy OP MTV 01 on Correspondence at http://www.doc.state.ia.us/Policies.asp

Family and friends can sign up for O-Mail (offender email) at www.corrlinks.com. There is a cost per message and that is responsibility of the sender. The ISP offender will be responsible for logging into his account and retrieving the message. Offenders who are in an Administrative -Segregation or Disciplinary Detention status will have their messages printed for them.

Visiting

Visiting hours are Friday through Monday 8:30-4:30. Visits will begin to be processed at 7:45 AM and will not be processed after 3:30 PM each visit day. Click Here for directions to both the exisiting and new facilities.

Visiting Hours for the John Bennett or Minimum Security Facility are as follows;
Fridays and Mondays sign-in times year-round 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM with the Visiting Room closing at 6:00 PM.  Saturday and Sunday sign-in times are 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM with the Visiting Room closing at 6:00 PM EXCEPT during daylight savings time. During daylight savings time sign-in times on Saturday and Sunday are 8:00 AM to 7:00 PM with the Visiting Room closing at 8:00 PM.

Visiting hours on state holidays shall be the same as the regularly scheduled times for that day.

Money/Property

Offenders are not allowed to have cash or coin money. IDOC Offender Fiduciary Account, 1550 L Street, Suite B, Fort Dodge, IA 50501.

All deposits must be in the form of a cashier's check or money order. All cashier's checks and money orders must be made payable to: IDOC Offender Fiduciary Account. The cashier's check or money order must include the following: offender name, offender number, sender's name and sender's complete address. All writing should be legible. If the deposit does not follow these guidelines it will be returned to the sender by mail. Offenders will receive receipts of deposits consistent with current individual institution guidelines.

Offenders are allowed to purchase property from canteen. Family and friends are not allowed to send in property items to the offender.
